Stars shine among the clouds at President’s Centennial Dinner

30 Oct 2019

Leading scientists, government ministers and new Union Ambassador Claire Forlani, gathered to enjoy traditional local cuisine in the historic hilltop Taj Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad, described as “a jewel amongst the clouds”, on Tuesday 29 October.

More than 200 guests attended the 8th President’s Centennial Dinner to celebrate The Union’s 99-year history and raise funds to fight tuberculosis (TB) and lung disease around the world.

Union President Dr Jeremiah Chakaya Muhwa opened the Centennial Dinner reflecting on his term as Union President over the past three years, saying “if I could change The Union constitution to stay President forever, I would.”

“I have never ceased to be amazed by the passion and commitment of the people who make up The Union have to the fight against TB. I want to thank all of you who support us. We would not be here, we would not be having the impact in the world that we do, without you.

“The work we do in India and other countries takes place deep within the communities that are on the front lines in the fight against TB. I will remain a proud Union member and continue to attend the Union World Conference as long as I can.”

José Luis Castro, Executive Director of The Union, spoke of the need to shake the world because too many people are dying of diseases that are preventable, treatable and curable, saying “People are dying for lack of sustained political will. Drug-resistance is growing. Air pollution is worsening.”

“Despite all of the problems, however, I am optimistic. At this year’s Union World Conference, we will announce scientific breakthroughs from great new progress on a TB vaccine, to new kinds of diagnostics, new partnerships, the first-ever summit for survivors of TB and lung disease.”

He finished with saying “I know we can pave the way to a future where TB and lung disease are stories in books rather than scourges in people’s lives.”

The President’s Centennial Dinner raises funds for The Union’s Centennial Campaign. It is held each year in conjunction with the Union World Conference on Lung Health.
